Warmth for Our Fishers

Jackets were gifted to our fishers as a simple yet meaningful gesture of gratitude for their hard work and resilience at sea. Dr. Wendy Medina, a researcher from Mexico, also spent time listening to their stories and learning about life at sea. More than protection from the cold, the jackets served as a reminder that our fishers are seen, valued, and never alone. Through care, listening, and practical support, Scalabrinian Stella Maris Uruguay continues to walk alongside those who dedicate their lives to the sea.

For those who work at sea, the challenges of life on the water extend far beyond the hours spent on the job. Long days, difficult conditions, cold weather, and time away from family require strength and resilience.

In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, jackets were distributed to our fishers to help keep them warm on their journeys. But the significance of this gesture went far beyond protection from the cold.

It was a reminder that their work matters, their sacrifices are recognized, and they have a community walking alongside them.

A Gesture of Gratitude

The jackets were offered as a simple expression of appreciation for the dedication and perseverance of our fishers.

Working at sea demands courage, patience, and resilience. Behind every journey are individuals who work hard to support their families and communities, often while facing difficult and unpredictable conditions.

A warm jacket may seem like a small gift, but when given with genuine care, it carries a much deeper message: You are seen. You are valued. You are not alone.

Listening to Life at Sea

The gathering also provided an opportunity for meaningful human connection.

Dr. Wendy Medina, a researcher from Mexico, spent time with our fishers, listening to their experiences and learning more about their lives and work at sea. Taking the time to listen is an important part of accompaniment. Every story shared offers a glimpse into the realities, challenges, hopes, and sacrifices of those who spend their lives working on the water.

These conversations help build understanding and strengthen relationships between the maritime community and those who seek to support them.

Care Beyond the Gift

At Stella Maris, accompaniment is about more than providing practical assistance. It is about creating a welcoming environment where seafarers and fishers can find comfort, friendship, and support.

During their time with us, our fishers were able to experience the care and services offered by Scalabrinian Stella Maris Uruguay—a place where they can feel welcomed and know that someone is ready to listen.

Whether through a warm jacket, a conversation, practical assistance, or simply a place to rest and feel at home, each act of care is part of a larger commitment to their well-being.

Walking Alongside Those Who Work at Sea

Our mission is to stand alongside people whose work and circumstances can often leave them far from their families and communities.

For fishers, that means recognizing not only the work they do, but also the people behind that work—their stories, their sacrifices, and their hopes.

Moments of solidarity like this strengthen the bonds of community and remind us that meaningful support begins with presence: being there, listening, welcoming, and caring.

At Stella Maris, we remain committed to walking alongside our fishers and seafarers, offering practical support and a place where they can find warmth, dignity, and human connection.

Be Part of the Mission

The work of accompanying fishers and seafarers is made possible through people who believe in the importance of hospitality, solidarity, and care.

You can be part of this mission by supporting our work, sharing our stories, volunteering, or helping others learn about the challenges faced by those who work at sea.

Together, we can continue creating a community where every fisher and seafarer knows that their efforts are appreciated, their stories matter, and they are never alone.
